This position is responsible for the implementation and management of strategic underwriting decisions and all related processes for Commercial Lines of business (i.e., Workers Compensation, General Liability, Auto and Excess) within the downstate NY/NJ region. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Conduct account Collaborative Underwriting Review Evaluations (CUREs) as specified within Commercial Accounts and Underwriting Guide authority triggers, to ensure that underwriting results for the region enhance overall profitability, growth and retention of Commercial Lines business and are consistent with all related underwriting initiatives

* Work with the Regional Operating Officer to develop and implement long and short term underwriting strategies to effectively position Commercial Accounts to market the right products, programs and/or services to the right market segment through responsible underwriting decisions.

* Establish underwriting policies and standards which support the development of products, services and/or new programs (i.e., research and identify target business, competitor information, analyze industry and economic factors, etc.).

* Participate in the strategic business planning activities for Commercial Accounts that are designed to increase the presence in the market of mid-size products and programs; retain the appropriate mix of business; and achieve overall growth and profit goals.

* Provide direction to field underwriters regarding production underwriting techniques and assist with producer calls and all program marketing efforts.

* Participate as an advisor in responsible product development, marketing communication and training efforts to ensure they are consistent with profit, growth and retention strategies related to new products and services and/or programs.

* Develop and ensure effective utilization of detailed monitoring standards to assess underwriting results (i.e.,'after the sale' reviews) on production and loss results down to the account level (i.e., line profitability analysis, quarterly loss trends, utilization/productivity, etc.) to correct field plan variances.

* Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (i.e., Risk Control, Claim, Operations, etc.) to facilitate underwriting and marketing decisions across groups.


* A minimum of 10 years Commercial Lines Property & Casualty Underwriting experience is required.
* Bachelors Degree preferred or equivalent work experience
* Proficiency in the use of personal computers and business software applications (e.g., Excel, Word and Outlook)


*Must be willing and able to travel to visit other Travelers offices and to attend external meetings and events. Travel willbe across the region and to other states (such as Connecticut). Some travel will be longer than one day in duration.
